The Emergency Management Department for Marion County is responsible for the County’s Emergency Operations Plan as well as the coordination of the overall response to major emergencies or disaster’s both natural or man-made. The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is responsible for emergency preparedness and disaster planning, coordinating efforts of multiple agencies including governmental, volunteer, and private; and mitigation and recovery during a disaster event. OEM also coordinates the efforts of emergency service providers including rural fire departments, search and rescue team, and hazardous materials response.

Preparedness on a Budget

  1. Place drinking water in containers (milk jugs, large soda bottles) and fill up your bath tub before a storm.
  2. Fill open plastic containers about 2/3 full of water and freeze in your ice box/freezer. Do NOT cover the plastic containers so that the frozen water can expand and not crack the container.
  3. The blocks of ice will maintain your freezer items cold longer, should electric power go out.
  4. If there is a "Boil Water Order" and you have run out of bottled water, bring water to a boil for one minute to purify. You may also purify tap water by adding 8 drops of unscented bleach per gallon or by using water purification tablets. 
  5. Eat perishable items first - throwaway anything in doubt or un-refrigerated.
  6. Combine resources with family/friends/neighbors.
  7. Top off your car's gas tank - avoid waiting in long lines with vehicle engine running.]
  8. Use 2 for 1 coupons when buying canned and other non-perishable items. Put one in your pantry and one in your disaster kit.
  9. Buy generic and buy in bulk! PET ITEMS TOO!


Home Repair After the Storm

If your home is damaged and you are hiring a home repair contractor, the Consumer Services Department offers a checklist of to-dos to get you started on rebuilding your home.



  1. File a claim with your insurance company.
  2. Document everything and take photos
  3. Know your contractor. Call references and beware of scams.
  4. Check complaint history with consumer protection agencies.
  5. Check the license and insurance.
  6. Obtain at least three estimates.
  7. Get promises in writing.
  8. Avoid paying large sums of money up front.
  9. Pay by credit card instead of cash.

After damages are reported, someone from the OEM Office will be in contact with you to gather more detailed information and come take pictures before any repairs have been made.

The 911 office is responsible for the ongoing efficient operations of the countywide Enhanced 911 system, with emphasis being to insure that all present and future addresses are included in the system to maintain and expedient level of response from emergency personnel. The 911 Coordinators responsibilities are, but not limited to, addressing, mapping, training, budgeting, educating the public on 911 and its features, Smart911 training and education, updating and maintaining MSAGs, reporting to Quorum Court on a monthly basis, working with all of the area telephone companies.

The E-911 Addressing and Mapping ensures that all new addresses are given correctly, and are entered in the system to maintain and expedient level of response from emergency personnel. All new structures constructed in Marion County must be issued by the 911/addressing and mapping office.
